L-Arginine and L-Citrulline Explained: Nitric Oxide, Doses and Safety

Quick answer

Both are amino acids the body uses to make nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. A 2019 review found 1,500 to 5,000 mg of arginine a day beat placebo for mild to moderate ED, and a small trial used 1,500 mg of citrulline. Alpha Erec lists both with no amounts. Never combine arginine with nitrate heart medicines.

L-arginine and L-citrulline are the two amino acids on the Alpha Erec ingredient list. They show up in almost every men's vitality formula, so it helps to know what they do, what the studies found, and who should skip them.

The product

What are L-arginine and L-citrulline?

Both are amino acids, the small building blocks the body uses to make proteins and other molecules. Arginine comes from food and is also made in the body, while citrulline is made in the body and then turned into arginine.

Brand graphic titled How Alphaerec Works with four steps and three Alpha Erec bottles on a stand
The brand's "How Alphaerec works" graphic lists L-arginine HCl in its "What is inside" step but leaves out L-citrulline, and it gives no amount for either one. Its third step, "Supports healthy blood flow and circulation", is marketing wording, not a claim from a printed label.

L-arginine

The "L" names the form found in the body and in food. Arginine is in most protein foods, such as meat, fish, dairy, beans and nuts. Supplements often use L-arginine HCl, arginine bound to a salt, which is the form Alpha Erec lists.

L-citrulline

Citrulline is not used to build proteins. Its main job is as a step in making arginine, and the body converts it mostly in the kidneys. The name comes from the Latin word for watermelon, where it was first found.

Nitric oxide

What is nitric oxide, in plain words?

Nitric oxide is a tiny gas molecule that the lining of your blood vessels makes from arginine. It tells the muscle in the vessel wall to relax, the vessel widens, and more blood can flow through it.

  1. Arginine arrives

Arginine from food, from the body's own supply or from a supplement reaches the cells that line the blood vessels.

  2. Nitric oxide is made

An enzyme in those cells turns arginine into nitric oxide. Citrulline is left over, and the body can recycle it back into arginine.

  3. Vessels relax

Nitric oxide signals the muscle around the vessel to loosen. The vessel widens, and blood flow rises in that area.

This is why researchers study both amino acids for erections, which depend on blood flow. It is also why they can clash with some medicines. Nitrate heart drugs and sildenafil-type drugs work on the same pathway, so adding more of it can push blood pressure too low.

Why take citrulline instead of arginine? Arginine swallowed as a pill is partly broken down in the gut and liver before it reaches the blood. Citrulline passes through and is converted later, which is why some researchers test it as a way to raise arginine levels.

Arginine review

What did the 2019 arginine review find?

It found that arginine did better than placebo for mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, and that side effects were more common on arginine too (Rhim et al., 2019). The review pooled trials covering 540 men.

Trade-off

Three limits are worth keeping in mind. The men had a diagnosed condition, so the result says little about healthy men looking for an edge. The doses were known and fairly large. And arginine was given on its own, not mixed with nine other ingredients in a gummy.

Citrulline trial

What did the 2011 citrulline trial find?

In a small trial, 24 men with mild erectile dysfunction took 1,500 mg of L-citrulline a day for one month (Cormio et al., 2011). Half of them reached a normal score on the hardness scale the study used, compared with 8% on placebo.

That is a striking gap, but the study was tiny and short. It looked only at mild symptoms, used one dose, and ran for four weeks. A result like this is a reason for larger trials, not proof that citrulline works for everyone.

Keep this in view: Both studies tested one ingredient at a known dose in men with a diagnosed condition. Neither tested Alpha Erec. Alpha Erec is a dietary supplement, not a treatment for erectile dysfunction, and it should never be used in place of one.

How do L-arginine and L-citrulline compare?

They work on the same pathway, but they differ in how they reach it and in how much evidence stands behind them. Here are the two side by side.

Where does Alpha Erec fit into this research?

Alpha Erec lists both amino acids, but it publishes no amount for either, so the studies above cannot be matched to a gummy. It could hold a pinch of arginine or a full studied dose, and the label gives no way to tell.

Brand graphic titled What Alphaerec Is For with two men in T-shirts and the Alpha Erec bottle on a stand
Another brand graphic. It says the product "supports healthy blood flow and circulation" and recommends at least 90 days of use. Both lines are the brand's marketing. The men shown are models, not customers.

The 1,500 mg citrulline dose from the 2011 trial is a useful yardstick. It alone is a sizable amount of powder, and the arginine range starts at the same figure. The brand does not publish the gummy's weight, so there is no way to tell whether one gummy could hold anything close to both.

If you want to judge the formula, ask the brand for its Supplement Facts panel. Until then, treat the blood flow wording as marketing, and read our side-by-side of all ten Alpha Erec ingredients against the research. Each one also has its own entry on the ingredients page.

Study length versus the brand's timeline

The citrulline trial ran for one month. The brand's sales FAQ says energy often shows in 1 to 2 weeks and performance in weeks 3 to 6, with many men waiting 90 days. Those are the brand's words, not study results, and no timeline is printed on any label we have seen. The practical test window is the 60-day guarantee, counted from the day you buy.

Safety

Are L-arginine and L-citrulline safe, and what do they interact with?

For most healthy men, these amino acids are well tolerated, though side effects were more common on arginine than on placebo (Rhim et al., 2019). The main concern is medicines: arginine can interact with several common ones (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

Nitrate heart medicinesBlood pressure can fall too farNever combine with an L-arginine product
Sildenafil-type drugsAdded effect on blood pressureAsk your doctor first
Blood pressure medicinesBlood pressure may drop too lowAsk your doctor first
Blood thinnersHigher risk of bleedingAsk your doctor first

Who should skip them

Skip both if you take a nitrate heart medicine, and check with your doctor first if you take any drug in the table. Take no more than the brand's one gummy a day, since a second gummy doubles every unknown amount at once.

What about citrulline on its own?

The Mayo Clinic page is about arginine. Since citrulline turns into arginine in the body, we apply the same cautions to it. That is our reading, not a separate study.

Every known side effect and caution for the full formula is on the Alpha Erec side effects page.

Habits

Why do food, exercise and a doctor visit still matter?

Because blood flow depends on the health of your whole circulation, not on one amino acid. Diet, activity, sleep and not smoking shape your blood vessels every day, and no gummy replaces them.

A lifestyle image from the brand's media kit; the man is a model, not a customer. Regular movement, like cycling to work, supports the same blood vessels these amino acids act on.

Food comes first

A normal diet with protein foods already supplies arginine every day. Watermelon adds citrulline. Neither needs a label to count.

Movement helps the vessels

Regular exercise keeps blood vessels working well, and it helps blood pressure, weight and mood too. Walking, cycling and lifting all count.

A doctor sees what a supplement cannot

Erection problems can be an early sign of heart or blood vessel disease. A doctor can check blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, and discuss treatments that are proven to work.
